Parents: John J. O’Connell worked at Kodak and E. Helen (Davidson) O’Connell was a nurse.
“Gerry” was born in Clifton Springs, NY on May 3, 1942. Her parents were John J. O’Connell, he worked at Kodak, and E. Helen (Davidson) O’Connell, she was a nurse. She was the oldest of five siblings: Gerry, Maureen, Eileen, Bob, and Pat O’Connell. The family lived in Lakedale along the river with a large field at the end of their street. In her teens, the family moved to their home on Mt. Read Blvd. Gerry enjoyed sharing stories of their childhood whenever the family gathered.
Growing up she loved playing with her dolls and making doll clothes. She also played piano and the cello. She enjoyed swimming, especially water ballet, taking nature walks, playing street baseball and dancing at parties. Later, she took up downhill and cross-country skiing.
She graduated from John Marshall High School in 1960 and three years later graduated from the Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing. Soon after she became a long time nurse at Rochester General Hospital in Labor and Delivery.
She had a lifelong love of animals. An avid bird watcher, she noted every first sighting in her bird identification book. She was also a dog lover and always had one of her dogs tucked in next to her.
Gerry LOVED Christmas! She was proud of her holiday crafts and collections and enjoyed hosting her holiday parties.
She married William Thomas Repp of Rochester, NY and had three children: Rick, Steve and Michelle. She was divorced in 1982.
She went to school part-time and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Nazareth College in 1990. She loved to travel and made it to/through all but one of the states in the continental U.S. Rhode Island was still on her bucket list. She loved her trips to Africa and Europe—especially Ireland—the homeland! She also enjoyed road trips including many years of trips to our cottage in Cranberry Lake, NY, and later to her brother’s cottage in Canada, although she never wanted anyone in front of her on the road!
Gerry’s piano was usually covered with pictures of her grandchildren: Jonathan, Jennifer and Nicholas Repp; Kristen and Katelyn Ikle; Randy Perry and her great grand-daughter, Rylan Perry. She also had many beloved nieces and nephews.
After she retired she continued to enjoy lunch gatherings with classmates and nursing colleagues as often as possible. She continued her bird watching, collecting, crafting, and had many favorite cooking shows. She was often seen wearing something sparkly.
Gerry was known for her ease in conversation and her positive outlook. She thoroughly enjoyed her independence and insisted on maintaining it to the very end.
